‘Up the Street’ will develop on from our work with speech, rhythm and body percussion.

In three groups, we will explore what it sounds like when we unpick ‘Up the Street’ rhythms to make new rhythmic combinations. For example, in the following way:

Group 1 ‘Up the Street’ – tapping knees Group 2 ‘Motherwell’ – clapping
Group 3 ‘Town’ – stamp

Moving from speech and body percussion, with the rhythmic material now securely in our bodies and in our minds we will add percussion instruments to our composition. We will explore ensemble and conducting games as we work with hand held percussion instruments.

This time we will also incorporate improvisation. Together we will devise a new musical structure that incorporates ‘Up the Street’ rhythmic material and improvisation.

For example:
A – Up the street Motherwell Motherwell….. B – Improvisation
A – Up the street Motherwell Motherwell…..

Development of Group Compositions

On our last visit, we invited children to begin to create their own musical compositions in small groups of their choosing. The second half of this lesson will be to share where we are so far. We will share and perform together and explore how we can develop our work.
